Some of the best family memories are made off the beaten path. We skipped school and hit the West MacDonnell Ranges with our niece and nephew, trading classrooms for red dirt tracks, swimming holes, glowing gorges, freezing mornings, and big hikes. From Ellery Creek and Standley Chasm to Mount Sonder and campfires under the stars, this outback adventure proved it was definitely better than school.

A journey through Central Australia took in remote camps at Finke Gorge, the sandy Boggy Hole Track, and the unexpected beauty of Palm Valley’s ancient palms and clear waterholes. Rough outback roads led to King’s Canyon, where the rim walk and Garden of Eden impressed, before unforgettable moments at Uluru sunrise, a bike ride around its base, and a final sunset at Kata-Tjuta.
